(Piper methysticum)

Description

Kava is used to make a popular drink used in the Pacific Island region. In the west, kava is frequently prescribed as an antidepressant, for treating anxiety and tension.

It has a diuretic effect and because of this, it is also used to treat gout and rheumatism. Kava is reported to act as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent in the urinary tract, making it helpful for urinary tract infections such as cystitis.

Western herbalists recommend Kava for its sedative properties, which do not seem to interfere with the person’s mental alertness. Kava is not reputed to be addictive, but caution should be taken using the herb for extended periods of time.
